"Inheritance" A painting process video with my music
Patrick Foster
This is a mostly real-time video of how I create. My works are for the most part, colorful, expressive and often allegorical. I begin each piece with no subject in mind and tease out forms and story from the squiggles I draw onto the canvas with thinned paint. As you can tell from the video, with the way I work false starts and misdirections are common. I see an image, connect it with another and explore the connection. If nothing develops then I know to look for another angle. The trick- and the hardest part- is staying uncommitted to a solidified story until all the elements are there. I can be headed in one direction, suddenly a curve looks like an outstretched arm rather than clasped hands and the entire focus of the piece shifts. Staying unfocused but mindful of what's developing gives the work time to develop its own narrative.
